The game takes place in the future, when humanity has evolved into an intergalactic society. Coral, a material discovered on the frontier planet Rubicon 3, might be used as both an energy source and a data conduit. Coral was regarded as the key to humanity's technological growth, but instead it triggered the Fires of Ibis, a cataclysmic event that devoured the planet and the surrounding star system in flames and left behind a toxic contamination. The calamity was assumed to have eaten all existing coral. However, fifty years later, evidence of Coral have been discovered on Rubicon 3.
